Welcome back to school!
I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful summer break and are looking forward to starting Year 6. I am so excited to welcome you all back and begin what promises to be a fantastic year together.

Autumn Term Curriculum Overview
English
In our writing lessons, we will begin with exploring The Arrival by Shaun Tan. This is a wordless picture book which offers rich opportunities for children to imagine the thoughts and emotions of the characters and culminates in them writing their own written version of the story.
In reading lessons, we will be reading The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo will be focusing our reading lessons on key skills such as retrieval, inference, sequencing, identifying synonyms and antonyms, and using evidence to justify impressions.
Maths
We will begin with securing our understanding of place value of numbers up to 10 million, including comparing, ordering and rounding. We will then move on to the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will secure mental and written methods for the 4 operations, considering which methods are most efficient for different problem solving scenarios.
P.E.
Gymnastics
Children will continue to learn, develop, and refine the key elements required to perform gymnastic sequences. These elements build on previous learning and include key shapes, balances, movement and travelling, such as jumps, leaps and rolls, and skills needed to work in pairs, small groups and individually.
Invasion Games
Through lessons on Tag Rugby, children will further improve their understanding of teamwork skills, following rules of the game and understanding group formations as well as individual roles.
Please make sure that your child brings their PE kit to school on Mondays and Fridays.
Science
The Circulatory System
The children will be learning about life processes that are internal to the body, focusing specifically on the Circulatory System and exploring how blood is transported around the body. We will be finding out about the impact of lifestyle on bodies and examining the work of Scientists in this area.
R.E.
What does is mean if God is holy and loving?
Learning about the Christian understanding of God through analysing bible texts, making links to worship and considering the connection these have to everyday life in the world.
History
What can the census tell us about local areas?
In History this half term, we will be examining how census records can help historians understand the past by making inferences about people's lives in different time periods.
Creative Arts
In music, we will be learning about dynamics, pitch and texture with a focus on appraising the work of Mendelssohn and further developing improvisation and composition skills.
In art, we will learn about the work of the Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, with a particular focus on line and shape.
PE
Please make sure you wear your PE kit on Mondays and Fridays so you are ready for our lessons.
Your kit should include black trousers or shorts and a plain white t-shirt (or one with the school logo if you prefer).
Homework
Grammar and punctuation homework will be set on a Friday and is due in on the following Wednesday. This will be completed in a CGP book.
Maths homework will be set on Fridays and will need to be completed online by Wednesday using 'Maths.co.uk'. Log-ins will be stuck into homework diaries.
Spellings will be tested weekly on a Monday and new spellings will be handed out on the same day.
As well as Grammar, Maths, and Spellings, children should continue to read regularly at home. We expect children to read for 45 minutes at least 5 times during the week.
Please use your TT Rockstars account, or other sites such as Hit the Button, to practise times tables as this supports so many aspects of the maths curriculum.
