Dear Families of Knightlow,
Welcome to Year 3 and Key Stage 2! I am thrilled to be joining the Knightlow community and have the privilege of teaching your child this academic year. I am really looking forward to getting to know the children and working closely with the wonderful staff and families throughout the year.
Year 3 is such an exciting time as children take their first steps into Key Stage 2, becoming more independent, curious and confident in their learning. We have lots of exciting opportunities planned for the year ahead, and I cannot wait to see the children grow, learn and shine as they take on new challenges.
Your support and encouragement at home is incredibly valuable, so please find on our class page some information about what we will be learning and ways you can support your child throughout the year.

DAILY ROUTINES
Children are welcomed into school via the KS2 door where they can store their bag in their locker. Bottles of water and a healthy snack for break time (and your packed lunch) can be stored on the Year 3 hydration station trolley by the classroom door. Make sure your child has their reading book and homework diary which they can put into their drawer which is also by the classroom door. Every morning when the children come in to the classroom, there will be an activity ready to start their day. At the end of the day, your children will come out of the classroom door onto the KS2 playground ready to go home.
WEEKLY ROUTINES
We have a few activities timetabled every week.
- Monday and Wednesday - children may have independent musical instrument lessons in school.
Wednesday and Thursday - PE lessons
On PE days, children can come to school wearing their PE uniform. Pupils need to wear a plain white t-shirt (or one with the school logo) and plain black or navy bottoms. Shorts or leggings are best in summer. A school jumper or school sweatshirt should be worn as a warmth layer when needed. Trainers appropriate for undertaking PE should be worn rather than fashion trainers. This is the school requirement for PE uniform.
Reading library session. This is on a Thursday afternoon where we go as a class to enjoy quiet reading in the school library. It's an opportunity to change books, relax in the library environment and have quality time to get lost in a good book.
HOMEWORK
Maths - All the children have an individual login for Times Tables Rockstars to practice times tables.
Reading - Please read as much as you can with your child and record it in the homework diary, ideally 5 times a week for 15 mins.
SPaG - This is the CGP book and issued on a Friday. The children will record the pages they need to complete in their homework diary. It is due back to school by the following Wednesday.
Spelling - Our spelling lesson is on a Thursday afternoon where we learn a new set of spellings. Our spelling tests are on the following Wednesday. The children will stick a list of the new words into their homework diary. A comprehensive list of the spellings for the year is available as a handout. Just email me via the office if you'd like one sending home.
Reading for Pleasure - Children take turns to bring home the book into which they have time to complete a book review of a book they have really enjoyed. It's a great opportunity to show creative flair and enthuse about a great book which might inspire others in the class to read it.
Science at home bag - Children take turns to bring home the science bag containing 'ingredients' to complete a variety of science investigations and report back in the log book, sharing what they have found out, and what they have enjoyed.
WAYS TO HELP AT HOME
Please read with your child. Take turns to read, listen to them read but most importantly ask them lots of questions about what you are reading to help develop their comprehension skills and understanding of the text. A great place to find recommended books for your child is the Year 3 page on 'The Reader Teacher' website.
To help with writing, taking opportunities such as making holiday diaries / scrap books, or sending postcards are all fun activities. Creating comic strips is a great way to combine drawing and colouring with writing text for more reluctant writers. Also playing games like Wordle and word searches are all enjoyable and can be a family activity.
TTRS is a great way to engage with maths and see if you can challenge yourself too.
Talk to your children about what they are learning and see if they can quiz you about what you know. The long term plan for Year 3 is attached here to share with you all of the learning scheduled for the year.
